Cruising to Tromso, Norway

Tromso tourist information.

Tromso, NorwayTromsø, a city in Norway, is a major cultural hub 350 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. It’s famed as a viewing point for colorful Northern Lights, with a season that last from September throughout March. From 20 May to 20 July the midnight sun shines, which makes it possible to participate in various activities around the clock. The city’s historic center, on the island of Tromsø, is distinguished by its centuries-old wooden houses. Here you find art, history, sophistication, good food and an infamous nightlife in a bustling, tiny city. All of it, though, is surrounded by spectacular scenery that is visible from everywhere in town. The city is home to the world’s northernmost university, as well as research institutes and satellite based industry.

The Arctic Cathedral

The Arctic Cathedral, built in 1965, is the city’s most recognizable landmark. This distinctive structure was inspired by Northern Norway’s landscapes, and features an original glass mosaic. In summer, the cathedral’s Midnight Sun Concerts are an excellent prelude to viewing the midnight sun.

Polaria has an arctic aquarium where the main attractions are the bearded seals. In large fish tanks you will find the most common species of fish in the Barents Sea and around Svalbard, and in a panoramic film you can follow the little auk flying across the Spitsbergen Archipelago.

Tromsø Cable Car

The cable car runs from Solliveien in Tromsdalen up to the mountain ledge Storsteinen (421 m above sea level) in just four minutes. The two gondolas, known as Seal and Polar bear, each have a capacity of 28 passengers. From the viewing platform at the upper station, you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Tromsø and the surrounding islands, mountains and fjords. At the fully licensed Fjellstua restaurant, you can enjoy a delicious dinner based on local produce or select light meals from the café menu, while you take pleasure in the view.
