Tórshavn tourist information.
Tórshavn, the capital and largest town of the Faroe Islands is located in the southern part on the east coast of Streymoy. It’s known for its old town, Tinganes, crammed with wooden turf-roofed houses on a small peninsula. Nearby is Tórshavn Cathedral, rebuilt in the 19th century. Local boutiques dot the main shopping strip, Niels Finsens gøta. To the north, the Nordic House cultural center offers theater, dance and music performances in a contemporary space.
Tórshavn is the place you’ll find the Faroes’ key institutions: the government, banking sector, university, national library and main hospital, to name but a few, are all here. The well-preserved and lively old town center rewards visitors with a confusion of narrow passages and lanes whose black-tarred houses are marked by emerald-turfed roofs and bright white windows.
